Five Reasons Why Avocados are a Must Have in Your Diet

Most people if not all love avocados. There are various ways of incorporating avocados into your diet. You can use soft avocados to make guacamole and firmer avocados for salads and sandwiches.

Avocado also known as alligator pear or butter fruit has several benefits. They provide substantial monounsaturated fatty acids and are rich in minerals and vitamins.

Let’s look at the benefits:

1.      Rich in nutrients – Avocados contain vitamins C, E, K, and B6 as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. They also provide lutein, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids.

2.      Good for the Heart – Avocados contain a natural plant sterol known as beta-sitosterol which helps maintain healthy cholesterol levels.

3.      Good for your Vision – Avocados contain two phytochemicals that are present in the eye tissue, namely lutein and zeaxanthin. The chemicals provide antioxidant protection to help minimize damage, especially from UV light.

4.      May help prevent Osteoporosis – A half piece of avocado contains approximately 18% of the daily value of vitamin K. Vitamin K is essential for bone health and taking enough of it can support bone health by increasing calcium absorption and reducing urinary excretion of calcium.

5.      Improve digestion – Avocados are high in fiber which can help prevent constipation, lower the risk of colon cancer and maintain digestive tract health.

Avocados are also used in other forms such as cooking oil, or for moisturizing the skin or hair.
