Toi Market Fire

Toi Market Fire

A fire broke out at Toi Market in Kibera, Nairobi, on June 11, 2023. The fire started at around 2am and quickly spread, destroying a large section of the market. Hundreds of traders lost their businesses in the fire, which is estimated to have caused millions of shillings in damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in a section of the market where electrical goods were being sold. The fire quickly spread to other parts of the market, which is made up of mostly wooden stalls.

The fire brigade responded to the scene, but it took several hours to bring the fire under control. By the time the fire was extinguished, most of the market had been destroyed.

The fire has left hundreds of traders without jobs. Many of them are now struggling to make ends meet. The government has promised to provide assistance to the affected traders, but it is unclear how much help they will receive.

The fire at Toi Market is a reminder of the dangers of fire in informal settlements. These settlements are often overcrowded and made up of flammable materials. Fires can quickly spread and cause widespread damage.

The government needs to take steps to reduce the risk of fire in informal settlements. This could include providing fire safety training to residents, improving fire prevention measures, and providing better access to fire hydrants and other firefighting equipment.

The fire at Toi Market is a tragedy, but it is also an opportunity for the government to take action to improve fire safety in informal settlements. By taking steps to reduce the risk of fire, the government can help to protect the lives and property of residents of these communities.

  1. Toi market was the source of income for many Kenyans the government needs to atleast make these people feel embraced 😔😔

This is particularly unfortunate given that some Kenyans earn a living from businesses established in the Toi market. The government, particularly the county government, should put in place measures to reduce fires that result in total losses!
