We’re the Millers is a comedic film about a family road trip full of adventures and mishaps.
David Clark, a small time marijuana dealer gets robbed of his cash and stash due to the naiveté of his teenage neighbor. To make up for the loss, his boss Brad convinces him to smuggle a large quantity of marijuana from Mexico into the US. For the shipment to be successful, David comes up with plan to invent a fake family on a road trip to avoid suspicion at the United States border.
He hires three people to pose as his fake family. He convinces Rose, a cynical stripper to act as his wife. She accepts because she needs the money. Kenny, his naive teenager agrees to play his son. Casey, a streetsmart runaway to pretend to be his daughter. She accepts at a certain fee. Together they become the Millers.
He rents a huge RV to transport the drugs and to avoid suspicions. They constantly bicker to their different values and conflicting personalities. Along the way they encounter several complications; run ins with a DEA agent who is on vacation with his family and trouble with a real drug lord.
The mishaps bond the fake family and gradually bring them closer to each other. They start to genuinely care about each other. They strike a deal with the authorities to go into witness protection where they live together like a real suburban family. They still grow some marijuana plants secretly in the backyard.
The Millers are a good example of why blood is not thicker than water. Despite not being related, they grow close to each other and choose each other every time. They become their own chosen family and their differences bring them closer together. The past lives erased they are able to develop into their own.
