The Notebook is based on a novel written by Nicholas Sparks. He was inspired by the love of his in laws.
Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton are a young couple who fall deeply in love in the 1940s. Allie is wealthy and spirited while Noah is poor but passionate. Allie’s parents disapprove of the relationship despite love for each other. They separate her from him in an effort to stop their love but Noah keeps writing to Allie everyday of the year till he joins the army.
Still unaware of the letters Allie gets engaged to a successful man, Lon. One day she sees the article about Noah restoring an old house. She remembers the promise he made to her years before. She packs up and goes to visit Noah. They rekindle their love and Allie breaks off her engagement to Lon to be with Noah.
The story is narrated by an old Noah as he reads from a book to a dementia patient who is revealed to be Allie. He hopes to bring back her memories. For a brief moment she remembers and they reconnect before the illness takes over. The film ends with the couple dying peacefully together. Their is strong in sickness, heartbreak and separation. The movie will bring you to tears.
