ONLINE HARASSMENT

Online harassment is the use of any electronic means to harass an individual or a group and can include accusation, defamation and/or slander. This issue carries weighty implications for one’s mental health and overall happiness. It’s unsettling to feel unease, stress, or even fear while using social media, which is unfortunately a common side effect of online harassment. Witnessing or experiencing this type of harassment can be highly emotionally taxing and creates an unwelcoming, unsafe online space. Engaging online becomes anxiety-inducing when targeted at specific individuals or communities, causing a continued sense of vulnerability. This sort of online harassment can stain one’s self-image, lead to self-doubt, and even prompt individuals to steer clear of social media or online communities entirely for the sake of preserving their mental wellbeing. Additionally, online harassment can extend beyond the digital realm, leaving lasting impacts. This has therefore, affected the way I engage with social media by making me more cautious and selective in my interactions and the content I share.
