The songs used in the film were originally written, sung and produced by a super group known as ABBA. The name is derived using the first letters of their names. ABBA was formed in 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They created many songs and sold plenty of records since 1974.

This film came out in 2008 garnering so much positive attention from the public. The musical comedy play was written by Catherine Johnson and Phyllida Lloyd. It was a box office hit. With a budget of 52 million US dollars, the movie grossed 694.6 million US dollars worldwide. It was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and distributed by Universal Pictures.
The movie was filmed in the beautiful island of Skopelos in Greece from August to September in 2007. The cast included Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Stellan Skarsgard and many other performers.
The film takes place on the fictional island of Kalokairi. A twenty year old Sophie is about to get married. She sends out invitations to three men after reading her mother’s diary, in hopes that one of them could be her father. The men rush to the island to see Donna. Sophie hides them from her mother who then discovers them by accident and chases them away. The movie show Sophie’s journey of discovering her father through various methods and Donna finding love.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
This sequel and/ or prequel came out in 2018. The screen play was written by Catherine Johnson, Ol Parker and Richard Curtis. With a budget of 75 million US dollars it grossed 402.3 million US dollars worldwide. It was directed by Ol Parker.
It was filmed in Oxford, Island of Vis in Croatia, Bordeaux, Hampton, Shepperton Studios and Stockholm from August to December 2017. Almost all of the same cast appear in the movie. Addition to the cast include Lily James ,Cher and other notable performers.
The film shows two stories that intertwine. It follows Sophie’s journey as she rebuilds the BellaDonna inn and prepares it for the grand opening. It gives insight to Donna’s journeyto Kalokairi before the birth of Sophie. It shows her story and the building of the inn. Sophie follows her mother’s story through pictures and stories from her closest friends.
If you are a fun of musicals and ABBA, this motion picture is a must watch. It exudes joy, sadness and excitement through the songs and the storytelling.
