I am in a matatu, which has slowed down because of traffic. This gentleman is eating his lunch at a joint besides the road, and then he remembers he had somewhere to go. He enters the matatu with the plate in his hand. Everybody: Traffic begins to clear, and the driver does what Nairobi drivers do best: accelerate and brake instantly. Dudes plate is now mid-air, and he is holding on to dear life because balance is no longer stable. Fish and ugali are now on the verge of landing on someone’s head. One thing is for clear, though: man’s is very determined, not to fall nor let his meal go anywhere else, just his stomach. The vehicle slows down, and he finds a seat and continues his meal with a smile.
Two things come to mind: the owner’s plate, especially because Nairobi people have attachments to everything, especially utensils.
Thing two: When he finishes his meal, where will he keep this plate?
In other unrelated matters, what would have happened if the sumptuous meal had landed on someone’s head?
