It is no doubt that the year 2023 has been a thorn in the foot for so many people. The rate of inflation has been the topic of the town and village as well with the prices of commodities such as petrol going beyond imaginable levels. Each and every day people anticipate for things to get better but instead they have been getting worse. So, what should we expect of next year ?
From the on going trend, it is obvious that we still have a long way to go before things get better. The economy is still on its knees and as the new year comes in, people should expect the same trend to be perpetuated. However, we should not give up since there is light at the end of the tunnel. On the other hand I must admit that this very tunnel seems to be very long to go through. Our president, Dr. William Samoei Ruto shed some light earlier when he was taking over power that we should prepare for hard economic times ahead . This is due to the fact that he was planning to embark or reduced external borrowing and reduced subsidies on goods such as petrol. He has instead subsidized farm inputs such as fertilizers in order to boost production. This is aimed at stabilizing the economy in future. This can be a slow process but it will soon bear fruits and it is a long term remedy as well.
For the next three to four months things may still be the same as the economy is still in the process of recovering from the strain and stretch. However, as we approach midway of the year 2024 we shall start experiencing some positive changes generally. Due to increased production, prices of goods may go down as well. When this happens, the government can now step in to subsidize the prices of fuel as well which will see prices of all commodities go down for the benefit of its citizens. This is not a guarantee though but if effected we can expect things to get somehow easy on our end.
As the year 2024 approaches the end for those who will still be alive, there will be a significant improvement in the economy. At such time our shilling will have stabilized over the dollar and life will be on the positive trend once more. This will only be possible if the taxes that are being collected from the citizens are put to better use. As the economy stabilizes, its everyone’s expectation that the government will go slow on her citizens concerning taxation.
As we endeavor to make life better amidst the challenges, I would like to urge everyone to put in their best in whichever sector they are involved. Unity is strength and if all of us pull with common goal and in the same direction we can achieve more. I wish everyone Merry Christmas and Happy new year 2024.
